Screening: " Mission to Earth "

 1. Using “Mission to Earth” as an example, note what is new or different about digital cinema compared to traditional filmmaking? Consider the story and appearance of the film.

"Mission to Earth", for me is a special digital film although i found it boring. Traditional filmaking always use different characters' conservation and dialogues to tell the story. However, digital cinema Mission to Earth etc use a storyteller to tells audiences what the story is talking about and there are only a maxium of two characters in the film.

And digital cinema use some special visual effects that makes the film more creative. For example, there are two to three squares in " Mission to earth", one is showing the story, others are showing the pictures, music and lines. Traditional filmaking never use this effect. Also, digital cinema can have some editing after the shooting that traditional filmaking can't. Digital cinema can add some pictures, music and visual effects, but traditional filmaking hasn't this digital technology, it's materials are already here such as the environment, props and people.

"Mission to Earth" just like showing different files, each scene seems like unrelevant and the scenes stop suddenly. It doesn't show in order. I think it likes showing one file, when the file end then next file start. Digital cinema's animation is mixed with live action and traditional filmaking only has live action.

Digital cinema has a better quality and it has 3D effect. 3D visual effects make audiences more participate in the films and more real.

2. What other art forms (eg film, digital art, painting, websites etc) does this film remind you of? Explain the similarity.

Powerpoint is similar to this film. The film use small squares as the screen, and the powerpoint also has square slides. Both of two have some visual or graphic effects such as circles and lines.

Also, i remind a artist that is Piet Mondrian who is "the father of geometric abstraction". His painting has a lot of grids and vertical and horizontal lines and different colors.

Wikipedia V.S Encyclopaedia Brittanica

I think Encyclopaedia Brittanica is better than Wikipedia because it provides more accurate information to people. As encyclopaedia brittanica is only allow particular experts to upload or change the information and it has a high monitoring process on the website, so there is a promise of it's accuracy and quality. Someone may argue that, wikipedia lets some unknown "experts" upload the information, let the encyclopaedia has a wider range of information. However, those information has not much confirm and the information may be wrong. How are the effects of provideing uncorrect information? Although encyclopaedia brittanica may use more time or cost to find and check the information, it is worth because accuracy is the most important thing of an encyclopaedia. If an encyclopaedia provide wrong information, it needs higher cost and more time to solve the problem.

Modern (Digital) Times

1. What are the benefits of the new technologies (industrial machinery, feeding machine, closed circuit cameras) shown in the film? Who gains from these technologies?

The benefits of the new technologies are more convenient because it is fasier and save a lot of labour resources. For example, the industrial machinery improves the speed of the production because the production line is automatic. So, the workers just need to stand in a specific place and do the same action. And the feeding machine helps people to save the energry and time to eat, people just need to sit down and then the machine will work and transport food to their mouth.
Bosses will gains from these technologies because the machines increase the flow of production. For example, closed circuit helps bosses to monitor their labours so that the labours will not be lazy and slow down the process of the production.

2. What is the effect of these technologies on the main character’s life/mood/body?

There are some bad effects such as feel bored, health problem on the main character's life, mood and body. First, as the technologies repeat all the time so the user( main character ) need to repeat the same action whole day, he will feel bored and think his job is meaningless. Also, the industrial machinery is fast and repeating, it makes the main character need to repeat the same action quickly and that will hurt his arms and shoulder. It is because he needs to move his arms very fast and no rest that will cause muscle strain. Last, the main character feel stressful because he needs to use all his power to follow the speed of the machine, and the closed circuit make he son't has any freedom. As for the feeding machine, it hurts the main character when it is damaged.

3. What effects does using computers and the internet have on your life/mood/body?

Computers and the interest make my life more fun and more convenient. I just need to stay at home than i can search many information and funny news at a short time though the internet. However, there are some health effects on my body because using the computer make my eyes feel tired and has the risk of having short sight. Also, when i use computer for a long time, my hands and the shoulders will feel tired.
